IBM’s Full Circle
Although Watson AI is not widely adopted, its use in medical setting is cutting-edge. Surprisingly, I hadn’t heard a lot about Watson AI until one of my health informatics professors shared a video. This health platform is able to score treatment plans for cancer patients, thereby provided personalized cancer treatment plans. The way it works is the system collects the doctor’s input data about his patient. Input data like the diagnosis and demographic data such as, age, weight, height, gender are calculated together with hundreds of medical journals and 140,000 other published studies and textbook information. Artificial intelligence then processes this data and produces treatment plan options. The top treatment plans will have a confidence interval of 85%-95%. I am not sure how many successful results this system has produced on live test (patient) data? The last I found was 1,400 patients, based on a news story published 6 years ago. I searched for more current and concrete statistics, but found none. (update below)
IBM Watson AI, is fascinating and brilliant. I look forward to other competitors coming to market in the near future.
In the video, Watson AI was called a “Game Changer.” While Rob High, the Chief Technology Officer for IBM showed off the large machine processing data through sophisticated algorithms. This Watson AL machine reminded me of IBM’s first mainframe computer—so large it needed it’s own room.
Has IBM really taken a full circle?

Perhaps IBM Watson AI mustn’t succeed?!
Some doctors might agree that IBM Watson is not good, but either way, technology can not be stopped, it continues to disrupt the status quo. I thought I would share this video I found hiding out in an obscure searched-results list.
