Never Approach Healthcare Technology without H.I.T.

“The ways that the quantity and quality of information available to a decision maker can be optimized are the subject of a great deal of work in informatics, with roots in information science and its intersection with clinical medicine.” (Balgrosky)

As long ago as 1990, David Eddy asserted, “The complexity of modern medicine exceeds the inherent limitations of the unaided human mind.” This is drastically compounded as an issue since that time. It is known that there is too much new information being produced every year for physicians, nurses, and others working in health to keep up with using traditional methods—that is, by reading pro- fessional peer-reviewed journals and other publications. There simply is not enough time in the day or the capacity in the human mind to hold and process all of this informa- tion and still perform one’s daily work. Thus, clinical decision support, artificial intelligence (AI), and knowledge workers who understand informatics and process design and integration become alchemists in their work to manage the science and art of introducing new technology into already complex clinical and business processes, which begs the question, “How much information is the right amount?” (Balgrosky)
